Stain matching and floor repairs that blend in.

Stain samples go down on your own floor, so you choose the color in your own light. Damaged or stained boards are cut out and woven in to match the rest of the room.

Stain studio

Pick a color to see it on sanded oak. Screens vary, so use this to narrow it down. We brush real samples on your floor before anything is final.

Natural Clear, no stain

Pick a stain

White oak, red oak, maple, hickory and walnut each take stain a little differently. That is why we test on your boards.

Why the sample goes on your floor.

The same can of stain can look like three different colors. These are the reasons, and why the decision is made standing in your room.

The wood changes it

Red oak pulls warmer, white oak cooler and browner, and maple can go blotchy under dark stains. Old boards have also aged since they were milled.

The sanding changes it

The last grit decides how much stain the wood takes in. Samples are sanded exactly the way the whole floor will be.

Your light changes it

North light, south light and lamps all shift a color. You choose in the room, at the time of day you use it most.

Repairs that don’t look like patches.

Pet stains, water marks, burns and deep gouges don’t always sand out. We cut out the damaged boards and weave new ones in, staggering the joints so the repair doesn’t read as a square patch.

Then the area is sanded, stained and finished to blend with the floor around it.

Can you match the color of my existing floor?

Usually, yes. We mix and test samples on site, next to the existing floor, until the color blends. Older floors have aged, so sometimes the most even result comes from refinishing the whole room together.

Why does a stain look different on my floor than online?

The species, the last sanding grit, the age of the boards and your light all change it, and so does your screen. The stain studio above is a starting point. The sample on your floor is the decision.

Will the repaired spot show?

New boards are woven in rather than set in as a block, then sanded and finished with the area around them. On an older floor, refinishing the whole room gives the most even color and sheen.

Can you fill in the floor where a wall or vent was removed?

That is the same weave-in work: new boards laced into the gap, then sanded and finished with the room so the line disappears.

Can the stairs get the same stain?

Yes. Treads and handrails are stained and finished to match the floors. See staircases.
