Staircases, from worn treads to new railings.

Carpeted or dated oak stairs turned into clean oak treads and a sturdy new handrail. Old wooden spindles come out and black metal balusters go in.

From dated oak to clean and modern.

Stairs take the most traffic in the house and get looked at every day. Orange oak, worn treads and wood spindles are where most of them start. We rebuild them piece by piece, then finish them in the same coats as your floors.

Treads
Sanded to bare oak, stained or clear, LOBA finish.
Risers
We recommend painting them white or black. We don’t paint them ourselves: we’re flooring people, not painters.
Handrails
New oak rails, sanded and stained to match the treads.
Balusters
Black metal in place of wooden spindles.

Staircases, part by part.

Every part of a stair gets its own treatment. Pick one to see what we usually do with it.

Tread

Carpet comes off. Worn treads get solid oak caps or are replaced with new oak treads.

Carpet off, oak on.

Carpeted stairs are a common place to start. Once the carpet and tack strips are off, we look at what is underneath. Sometimes the original treads sand out well. If not, they get solid oak caps or new oak treads. Every tread is sanded with Festool sanders hooked to a dust extractor.

Can you redo carpeted stairs in oak?

Yes. The carpet and tack strips come off, then the treads are sanded, capped with new oak or replaced, depending on what is underneath.

Can you replace the spindles and keep my handrail?

Sometimes. It depends on the condition of the rail and how the new balusters attach to it. We look at it at the walkthrough and tell you what is possible.

Will the stairs match my floors?

That is the idea. Treads get the same stain and the same LOBA finish as the floors, ideally in the same job, so the color reads the same from the front door to the top step.

How long are the stairs out of use?

Finish coats need time to dry. We plan the order of the work with you so the house stays usable, and tell you ahead of time when the stairs are off limits.

Do you paint the risers and the stringers?

No. We are flooring people, not painters, so painting is not part of our work. We do recommend painting the risers white or black: the oak treads stand out against them. Any painter can take care of the risers and the stringers.
